Cremation Urns Frequently Asked Questions Do you put ashes directly in urn? The answer can depend on the type of urn that you’re purchasing but generally, urns are designed for direct contact with human ashes. However, with the growth in types, constructions and materials it can be hard to give an across the board ‘Yes’. We would strongly recommend that you seek clarification from the urn supplier. How do you transfer ashes to an urn? You have two options. You can choose to pour directly into the urn. However, to avoid the need of pouring the ashes directly into the container, you may wish to use an additional biodegradable bag to pour the ashes into first. Once safely inside simply put the top back on and firmly twist and lock the urn for safekeeping. However, we recommend checking with the urn supplier about specific ash transfer instructions for the urn that your purchasing. What size cremation urn do I need? The standard ash capsule from the crematorium has the size 16,5 cm x 21 cm. At Mementi, our urns (except those designed for children and animals) have a diameter of 16,5 cm and a height of 21 cm as standard. So there should be enough space in the urn for a capsule of this size. Furthermore, an urn shouldn’t be bigger than 25 cm x 25 cm so that it fits into the urn wall, depending on the burial method. Do urns need to be sealed? Frequently there can be various options that will be employed by differing manufacturers and often for different materials and constructions. These range from locking mechanisms, threaded screw tops (some with additional gaskets), there can be stopper caps as well and some are sealed with an additional sealant or caulk.
